Ever since the release of the original "Purple Rain" in 1984, Prince has been one of the most prolific and influential musicians in American music. His influence has contributed to making him one of the best-selling artists in history, with an estimated 100 million records sold worldwide. But not only is he a musical prodigy; he is also an actor, director, entrepreneur and philanthropist. This blog will be about his life through pictures showing his accomplishments and style during different periods in his career.
Prince was born Prince Rogers Nelson in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on 7th June 1958. He is the son of jazz singer Mattie Shaw and jazz pianist John L. Nelson. His mother nicknamed him "The Artist" since the minute he began to speak, which stuck with everybody who knew him when he became famous. Prince has one brother, Joshua B., who is 8 years younger than him. Prince's father is an African-American musician and former lead vocalist with The Minnesota Chocolate Drops, while his mother was a pianist at local clubs in Minneapolis.
Prince met his first love interest in high school when he met Ann DeFrendes at a talent show when she was just 14 years old. After they started dating, she moved in with him and his family in his hometown of Chanhassen until she died of cancer at the age of only 20. Prince was so devastated after this that he told different media outlets that he would have committed suicide by overdosing on drugs if it wasn't for Ann's surviving family saying that plastic surgery would be too much for her, because her body was not in good condition to receive it.
After graduating from high school, Prince moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in music. He became friends with Minneapolis native Wendy and Jimmy Jam while still pursuing his musical ambitions while living there. He eventually gained a record deal with Warner Bros. Records in 1978 and decided to name himself after a member of his band named, Shante, which means "Queen"
Prince established himself as a prominent signer in the 1980s, when he released his first solo album, the 1984 album "Dirty Mind". A year later he released his second album, "Controversy", from which came big hits such as "Little Red Corvette" and "Delirious". He also collaborated with artists such as Sheila E. and D'Angelo for the 1985 album "Purple Rain".
As a musician, he started his own record label, Paisley Park Records. He also founded a publishing company that was named NPG Publishing.
Prince won 10 Grammy Awards, 8 American Music Awards and 7 American Music Video Awards. He is the third musician in history to have at least two albums go Diamond by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). In 2004, Rolling Stone ranked him #30 on its list of 100 Greatest Artists. In 2006, he was awarded an honorary doctorate from Wesleyan University "for his accomplishments as a musician and social activist".
